Public Service Public Service is a part of my life. Each day I seek opportunities to push beyond my physical lim itations as a quadriplegic. In fact, I believe that the challenges I face have built strong character in both my professional and personal roles. Whether the challenges emerge from the struggle in funding for a community Center for Independent Living or from the loss of mobility, I embrace each challenge with gusto and determination.
My community involvement began in 1998 when I received the title Ms. Wheelchair Georgia by the Mayor's Commission. This platform provided me the opportunity to be a liaison between citizens with disabilities and the Columbus Consolidated Government. Under leadership and coordination from the Mayor’s office, I developed and implemented various programs and projects to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities across the state. Which include annual employer workshops, job fairs, and career training, and disability education programs in Muscogee County schools. My adoration for public service expanded into a partnership with The Children’s Miracle Network, successfully raising funds and awareness through local benefits.
My commitment to public service was the decisive factor in my study of Public Relations at Columbus State University. My studies lead me to a career in Real Estate, where I utilize my education for home modification improvements through local builders, realtors and contractors.
I am currently working with the Executive Director of the Statewide Independent Living Council of Georgia. My goal is to develop a Center for Independent Living (CIL) in my community. The center serves as encouragement to people with disabilities to make their own choices and works to open doors in the community to full participation and access for all.
As an advocate I continue to reach people nationally through a professional speaking career. On average I speak at 40 venues throughout the year using my published autobiography as inspiration to audiences “to get inspired, know your purpose, and live your dreams.” In 2009 I spoke at Fortune 500 Company AFLAC, leading an audience of 500 to become innovative as their industry faces changes. Other corporate clients include Safe Kids of Georgia, Callaway Gardens, and Toastmasters International. I am deeply committed to further my growth in public service.
